The Mapping Model

The Seven Levels of Consciousness Model was created by Richard Barrett of the Barrett Values Centre to give more definition and understanding to human motivation. The Seven Levels of Consciousness Model is based on and is an adaptation of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. To learn more about the origins of the model, please read From Maslow to Barrett.

What is consciousness? It is an awareness with purpose. It is having joint or common knowledge with another or oneself. The Seven Levels Model is a framework for understanding how individuals, organizations, and leaders develop and grow. Using this model to map personal, organizational, and leadership values:

  • Makes it possible to translate qualitative data into quantitative data
  • Provides a baseline measurement for monitoring changes in the organizations culture
  • Provides a baseline measurement for monitoring changes in personal consciousness
  • Provides a baseline measurement for monitoring changes in leadership consciousness
  • Provides a method for measuring cultural capital
